Asilomar Mathematics Conferences
December 1-4, 2005

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB, a.k.a. Title 1) of January 2002 states that Professional Development should be of a long term nature with focus on areas that would work to improve student performance at the site. A workshop series that focuses on a content area in depth is viewed appropriate (as opposed to a format that offers a variety of “one shot” workshops).

CMC-North’s Asilomar Mathematics Conference with its focus on closing the achievement gap in mathematics is an ideal professional development opportunity. Its exciting program will also support the criteria of NCLB. The keynote speakers on Friday evening and Sunday morning, as well as the workshops and sessions on Saturday offer participants numerous opportunities to:
  • Increase their knowledge in a specific mathematics content strand,
  • Learn effective instructional techniques, and
  • Explore ways to assess student learning to inform instruction.

The attached worksheet has been provided to support your interest in this learning opportunity at your site, should such justification be needed. Using the conference program, select keynote sessions to attend and create a learning plan for Saturday that meets your focus criteria. For example:

A middle school teacher who has selected geometry as an area of focus might select:
