Sessions of particular value to those interested in, or
wanting more information about,
CPM:
Saturday Asilomar
Grounds 8:30-9:30
513 LEVEL: 7-10 TYPE: INT ALGEBRA CONNECTIONS: CPM'S PROBLEM-BASED ALGEBRA 1 COURSEKaren Arth, Teacher, Central HS East, Central USD The
second edition of CPM Math 1 Algebra 1 has been recreated as "Algebra
Connections." This course uses the same investigative, problem-solving,
spiraled approach as its predecessors, but offers more open-ended,
team-worthy investigations while at the same time providing guidance
for students who need it. Each lesson comes with detailed teacher notes
so that the intent of the CPM authors is clear and teachers have
suggested questions to ask the study teams and to use for lesson
closure.

613 LEVEL: 7-11 TYPE: INT ALL STUDENTS ARE SMART. YOU JUST HAVE TO GIVE THEM OPPORTUNITIES TO SHOW IT!Bev Brockhoff, Mentor Teacher, CPM Educational Program Math
is often where students are labeled (by themselves or others) as
"smart" or "not smart." However, effective strategies can work to help
all students learn with a deeper understanding of core math ideas. Come
participate in several algebra and geometry activities from the new CPM
algebra and geometry courses that employ strategies that make math
accessible to all students, especially in heterogeneously grouped
classes, while also making it more meaningful for accelerated students.

713 TICKET REQUIRED LEVEL: 8-11 TYPE: W USING MANIPULATIVES AND INVESTIGATIONS IN GEOMETRYDamian Molinari, Teacher, Phillip & Sala Burton HS, San Francisco USD This
session uses problems from CPM's new Geometry Connections course to
give teachers hands-on lessons to teach several topics in geometry. Use
hinged mirrors to investigate the central angles of polygons, rubber
bands to explore dilations, and string, straws, and weights to
understand height in triangles. These lessons help make these topics
concrete and visual so that they are accessible to all students.

3:30-5:00 813 TICKET REQUIRED LEVEL: 7-11 TYPE: W MULTIPLE REPRESENTATIONS MAKE ALGEBRA ACCESSIBLE FOR ALLBev Brockhoff, Mentor Teacher, CPM Educational Program Participate
in activities designed to develop a rich understanding of the
connections between a table, graph, rule, and context. After solving
challenging problems and exploring ways connections can be used to
enrich learning, we will use student work to analyze how emphasizing
multiple representations can help develop students into powerful
problem solvers. You will see how using these ideas can drive
curriculum, specifically the study of lines, quadratics, inequalities,
and equations.
