between 3:15 & 6 today, or Friday or Saturday between 7:30 and 9:15.
THURSDAY Kick-Off Sessions Asilomar Grounds, 4:00-5:30
LEVEL: H, M TYPE: DEVELOPING MATHEMATICAL REASONING USING TRIANGULAR NUMBERSJohn Leamy, Professor of Math, Columbia CollegeTriangular Numbers, interesting in their own right, also give students a unique opportunity to use the interplay between symbolic, geometric, and numerical representations to conjecture, and prove results. We will look at a wide variety of facts about triangular numbers, and “proofs” at many different levels of mathematical sophistication.
LEVEL: BT, E, P TYPE: HOT OFF THE PRESS! LITERATURE TO MEET STANDARDSCarrie Carpenter, ConsultantCome join a fun and practical session that has the hottest new children’s literature to integrate into your class. Stories used will introduce and explore concepts that will grab students’ attention, construct meaning, and make real-world connections.

7:15-9:00 LEVEL: P, E, M, BT, AdEd, TchrEd, C, H TYPE: NUMERICAL ILLITERACY: ADDRESSING A NATIONAL CRISIS Ruth Parker, CEO, Mathematics Education Collaborative Students leave our schools numerically illiterate—unable to make sense of numerical information or use mathematics to solve problems and make sense of situations. This session explores the reasons why and proposes fundamental changes to mathematics programs to help overcome this national dilemma. Learn how to help students develop the skills and understandings needed to reason with numbers flexibly and fluently, and learn what parents and business leaders say about this proposed approach.

FRIDAY Night Keynote Session Pacific Grove Middle School Auditorium, 7:30-9:00
LEVEL: P, E, M, H, C, TchrEd, AdEd, BT TYPE: THE STRUGGLE TO RESPECT CHILDREN’S THINKINGJulian Weissglass, Professor of Education, Univ. of California, Santa Barbara For over 100 years educators have argued about how to teach mathematics. This talk will outline the history of that struggle and offer some perspectives for how we can increase our schools’ capacity to respect children’s mathematical thinking. For example, some studies have found that forty to sixty percent of high school students are chronically disengaged from school and claim to be bored. I will describe some strategies we can use to make schools more engaging for young people.
