...and see for yourself!

Celebrate Mathematics!
The California Mathematics Council is pleased to announce a wonderfulway tocelebrate mathematics in your school: the CMC Mathematics FestivalProgram.  Now, in addition to our professional developmentconferences for educators, CMC offers a hands-on, fee-for-serviceprogram that can reach EVERY K~8 student at your school, and caninclude coordinated programs for teacher professional development andoutreach to families as well.

f02Kidspatternblocks: Hold a Math Festival!

What is a Mathematics Festival?  A CMC Mathematics Festival is anexciting school wide event to expose students, teachers, and parents tokey critical mathematics topics in a positive, self exploratory,festival-like atmosphere.  The Mathematics Festival program isdesigned for ready access to Kindergarten through 8th grade studentswith activities and challenges appropriate for ALL those grades. A CMC Math Festival is good mathematics, Standards based, ANDFUN!

f03girlsMIRA: Standards Based!

Your students can experience the Standards first-hand at aMath Festival.  Each of the three CMC Mathematics Festivalsconsists of 12 to 18 different problem solving activity stations, eachfocusing on one or more key mathconcepts from the California Mathematics Standards.  Each Stationhas 12 to 16 different math tasks to meet all students’ abilities andskills, K~8.

There are currently 3 different Math Festivals to choose from:

• ALGEBRA

• GEOMETRY

• NUMBER

hands-on for K~8 Grades!
Math Festival stations are multi-graded and highly interactive. Atstations students use everything from blocks and beans to laptopcomputersto solve tasks.  For instance at one station students makealgebraic function patterns out of CUBES, while at another station theysolve simultaneous equations with two unknowns using BEANS.  Eachstation offers challenging tasks of differing levels of difficulty;some are easy enough for young primary students; some are hard enoughto challenge adults.  During a session, students working in pairscan solve many problems and visit many Math Festival stations.

Involve Parents!f04family:
Welcome your community to an evening Family Mathematics Festival andmake apoint about math.  Your school can combine a student MathematicsFestival with a CMC Family Mathematics Festival that sameevening.  Students can bring their whole families to the sameMathematics Festival they attended that day, and workside-by-side with their family members in doing the problem solvingactivities.  Givemothers, fathers, guardians, and the whole family an opportunity toenjoymathematics together and learn about the math their students study atthesame time.  Family Mathematics Festivals can provide themeaningfulparent outreach and involvement that is now required and beneficial inmany state and federally funded math programs.  Reach out to yourwhole school community, and share the beauty and power of math!

Help Teachers!

The Math Festival experience can also include a CMC teacherprofessional development workshop to further extend the Math Festivalstation concepts and materials.  CMC's Professional Presenters canshow your K~8 teachers how to take the Festivalmaterials and extend the learning by using them as stations, activities, and structured lessons in their own classrooms.

Curriculum Materials!
Everyschool that hosts a Math Festival receives a complete set ofthe Festival's printed curriculum materials based upon thatFestival's topic. There are three CMC Math Festivals: Algebra,Geometry, and Number, and each has it's own completely different MathFestival curriculum. These Math Festival materials are designed to helpyour school extend the learningand excitement of your Math Festival day—all year long! Theprinted Festival materials consist of photocopies of the MathFestival station instruction posters for each activity; Spanishtranslations of the instructions;photocopies of EVERY task for every Math Festival station (average 12different problem solving tasks per station); lists ofmanipulatives and materials needed for each station; and answers tomost ofthe station's problems. We encourage your teachers to use of thesematerials in creative ways. With these printed materials your schoolcould even host YOUR OWN Math Festival, and several schools have doneso!
