VIDEO IPODS TO STUDY STUDENT INTERVIEWS FOR MATH AND LANGUAGE

Joan Easterday, Mathematics Project Manager, Sonoma COE; & David Chosa, Teacher/Mentor, Kawana, Bellevue SD
Student interviews have become an integral part of our work. By video taping the interviews and posting on iTunes we can download for group analysis. Lesson study groups have studied their interviews for naïve mathematical thinking, language demands, and the levels of questions being asked. The analysis of the interviews has then been used to thoughtfully plan their lesson study.

TEACHING STUDENTS HOW TO JUSTIFY IN A DIVISION OF FRACTION LESSON.

Josh Deis, Math Specialist, Sonoma County Office of Education
Getting students to explain and justify is our most important job as math educators because it is the glue that holds together mathematical understanding.  During this session we will share how we used the lesson study process to build options for different student and teacher responses that fosters higher order thinking skills in all students.
