Student Problem Solving Activities

Important Notice About Submitting Student Work.
Since we may be publishing some of the student work, it is very important that teachers have, on file at the school, permission from the authors as well as their parents for publishing the student’s work here on the web and in a future issue of the ComMuniCator. Please do not send us the permission forms; simply indicate in a note to the person listed for the activity that the permissions are on file.

Other Problem Solving Activities

The deadline for submitting solutions to the problem-solving activities which follow may not fit into individual teacher’s lesson plans. Since we are interested in how students solve nonroutine problems, here are two additional problem solving challenges.
  • We as a panel enjoy hearing about how teachers use ComMuniCator ideas in their classrooms. If there are activities from this issue (or from previous issues) that you use with your students, we are asking that you share the results with us. In particular, we would like to know how students solved the problem, completed the activity, built the model, etc. You may want to include photos or copies of student work to share with other CMC members in a future issue.

  • Do you have a favorite problem solving lesson of your own to share? We invite your account of other problem solving activities that your students have enjoyed, as well as photos or examples of your students’ work. Problems or activities can be of your own creation or from some other source.

For the general problems above or the specific problems which follow, teachers are encouraged to submit their students’ answers, drawings, photographs, or any appropriate evidence reflecting their work to:
