California Math Council presents Math Solutions for California Teachers, K-5
Problem solving is an integral part of math learning and teaching. This course provides teachers firsthand experience with learning mathematics through problem solving. Teachers are introduced to approaches and strategies they can use to help students build new mathematical knowledge. The role of the teacher in a problem-solving classroom will be examined by focusing on open and closed tasks and the questions teachers ask that require students to think, reason, and communicate. A variety of strands of the mathematics curriculum will be addressed with a special focus on developing number sense.
Through hands-on experiences at each course, you will:
• Use problem-solving experiences to help children develop understanding.
• Help students become flexible in their ability to reason numerically.
• Pose questions and tasks that engage all students’ thinking.
• Integrate assessment and instruction.
• Organize instruction for whole-class, small-group, and individual learning.
