TODOS STRAND TODOS: Mathematics for All
Sessions of particular interest to those involved in teaching traditionally underrepresented students:
Saturday Pacific Grove Middle School
8:30-10:00
533 TICKET REQUIRED LEVEL: GI TYPE: W MEETING THE STANDARDS FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS THROUGH COMPREHENSIBLE INPUTElmano Costa, Associate Professor, CA State Univ. Stanislaus How
do you teach children math when they speak little or no English? This
hands-on session presents methods that teachers who do not speak the
children's primary language can use to make their instruction
comprehensible. A highlight of this session is a sample lesson,
employing the strategies taught in a foreign language, that involves
the participants and clearly demonstrates that it is possible to make
math instruction comprehensible. Comprehension is the first step in
meeting the standards.

10:30-Noon 633 LEVEL: 6-12 TYPE: INT READING COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES FOR PROBLEM SOLVINGCarl Lager, Professor, UC Santa Barbara To
become effective problem solvers, learners must be able to first
understand the problem (Pólya, 1945). Though NCTM (2000) expects
secondary mathematics teachers to "...help students...learn to read
increasingly technical text" (p 351), neither NCTM nor the CA
mathematics standards explicates how to do so. In this session,
mathematics-specific reading comprehension strategies will be shared to
help teachers help students, especially ELs, sharpen
problem-understanding and problem-solving skills.

1:30-3:00 733 TICKET REQUIRED LEVEL: 3-5 TYPE: W MATH MODELS FOR FRACTIONS TO DEVELOP LANGUAGE AND CONTENTJaine Kopp, Director, Bay Area Math Project See
how to use models and concrete materials to develop mathematical
language for and conceptual understanding of fractions. Connect the
concrete experiences to develop an understanding of fractions as
numbers. Use techniques to include all students in developing content
knowledge.
TODOS BT
3:30-5:00 833 LEVEL: 6-9 TYPE: INT ACCESSING RIGOROUS MATHEMATICS TASKS THROUGH SCAFFOLDING STRATEGIES FOR ELSJeanne Ramos, Secondary Mathematics Coordinator, Los Angeles USD In
this interactive session, contextual and linguistic scaffolding
strategies to make rigorous mathematics tasks accessible to ALL
students, including English learners, will be modeled and emphasized.
Models from research that promote both the development of academic
language and conceptual development of mathematics will be presented.

9:00 - Noon
Although not sponsored by TODOS, all four Sunday morning sessions will be of
particular
interest to all concerned with issues of equity and access. Pick two of the four! See Asil Sunday
