Mathematics for Parents, a new column in the CMC ComMuniCator,
is written to help teachers help parents, who, in turn, can help their
children study mathematics. Each column will offer practical
suggestions teachers can share with the parents of their students. We
would like to provide information that will help parents or guardians
work with children at home, advocate for their children from preschool
through high school, and learn to enjoy mathematics so they can share
positive experiences and attitudes with their children.
Beginning with this issue, we will reprint sections of the booklet Math at Home,
produced and published by the Sonoma County Office of Education. The
document was written with parents—not teachers—as the audience, so its
pages represent straightforward, jargon-free information, activities,
suggestions, and resources for parents to better understand the
importance and significance of mathematics to their children.
MatH01 provides the first excerpt from the booklet Math at Home,
and includes some ideas about how parents can provide the right
environment for students to do their mathematics homework. It also
provides some ideas about how parents can utilize careful listening
skills and asking key questions as part of their help with homework.
Permission is given to reprint this article. Teachers and
administrators are encouraged to use this page in school and classroom
newsletters, for parent education events, and for use at parent teacher
conferences. It was written with parents and guardians as the primary
audience. We hope you find this column useful in assisting your parents
in helping their students.
