SURVEY: 8th Grade Algebra Testing For All

The State Board of Education voted in July to have all  8th graders take the Algebra 1 California Standards Test. URGENT: Please click here to read more about this action and responses from educators, and--most importantly--to have your voice heard. We have undertaken a survey of opinions and will share the data with the State Board, Superintendent Jack O'Connell, and the CA Dept of Education.

mathFormula2: mathFormula2Our Mission

The California Mathematics Council believes that all students have the capacity to become mathematically competent and confident when provided a rigorous and challenging mathematical program supported by high expectations.

The California Mathematics Council is committed to:

  • promoting professional activities that will ensure continual improvement towards excellence in the teaching of mathematics

  • communicating with educators, parents, the public, and legislative bodies concerning issues related to teaching rigorous, challenging mathematics; and

  • increasing the diversity of the membership of the California Mathematics Council and the diversity of leadership in mathematics education at the local, state, and national levels.

The Mathematics Adoption Toolkit

is designed to support the selection of instructional materials for grades K-8 core programs, Algebra Readiness, and Intervention, and can also support a grades 9 – 12 adoption process.  While all adoptions are serious business in education, this adoption is a key factor for schools and districts challenged to meet required levels of proficiency for all students by 2014.

The Mathematics Adoption Toolkit is the result of collaborative efforts between the mathematics subcommittee of the California County Offices of Education, the California Department of Education, and the California Mathematics Council.  It builds upon the adoption process of social science and science and sets the stage for the language arts adoption.

The tools posted here for your use are:
  • A Toolkit PowerPoint (click) presentation used to provide an overview of the adoption process.
  • PDFs of the toolkit which include the facilitator guide, worksheets, and directions to carry you through the process.
  • A link to the website (click here) with on-line worksheets that can be completed by individuals on the adoption committee. With the website use, the results are automatically compiled and can be used for decision making and for the final report.
  • A list of (click) County Contacts: County Office of Education contacts that can provide additional support in preparing for and/or conducting the adoption of mathematics materials.

Using Mathematics Concepts as Scaffold for Academic Language

Download a pdf of the PowerPoint presentation by Harold Asturias, his 2006 Keynote address at the Asilomar Mathematics Conference.

In this presentation, Harold makes a connection between Mathematics Education and Literacy Education as a framework for developing mathematics academic language, particularly with English learners. He discusses these key points:
  • goals of mathematics and literacy education;
  • features of academic language;
  • specific academic language proficiencies English learners need;
  • differences among skills, concepts, and problem solving;
  • language, culture, and mathematics issues embedded in the wording of problems we present to students.

Mathematics Festival for Schools & Math at Home

CMC has developed new Mathematics Festival Programs which can be taken to your school for parent outreach as well as teacher professional development and student involvement.  Check out the site and book your school's participation now!  And in a realted matter,  read about our booklet, available to all, in our Mathematics for Parents column. 25,000 copies, in English and Spanish, were mailed to all CMC members and to every public and private school in the state.

The POW!

It started right here!

CMC is proud of its history, a history that includes a strong tie with Problems of the Week. The venerable POW or P-O-W was started right here in California by Lyle Fisher, Past-president of CMC and CMC-North, Bill Medigovich, long time treasurer for CMC and CMC-N, and Dale Seymour. At the time they were working at St. Mary's College, Moraga, with Bro. Alfred Brousseau, also a Past-president of CMC and CMC-N.

The PoW shows that there's much more to math than the two-page spread of problems, each of which can be solved in two minutes. It has caught on all over the country and around the world, and has been exported to many other subject matters, such as the S-O-W, the Squiggle of the Week which connects art and creative writing.

CMC has developed a position on high-stakes Testing. Go to our Issues for Parents and Teachers page for added information. Please read and consider it carefully.

Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program (FMF)

In existence for over ten years, FMF sends 600 educators annually to Japan to take part in an educational and cultural study visit.  The deadline for the FMF competition is early December. Check the FMF website for additional information.

TEACHER EDUCATORS NOTE:
Online Mentoring Project—The Math Forum @ Drexel

The goal of the NSF-funded Online Mentoring Project,  is to create a dynamic online environment for pre-service teachers to mentor students in grades 3-12 using the Math Forum's Problems of the Week (PoW). This is a unique opportunity for pre-service teachers to focus on how students think about math before they face the complexities of the classroom. A beta version of the Online Mentoring Guide (OMG) is now available for use and is free to higher education faculty interested in using it with their students. Mathematics and science educators are also invited to collaborate with the Math Forum by reviewing and contributing to a revision of the OMG and by contributing mentoring resources to the Guide (e.g., research articles and Web resources).

PoWs Available on-line to Teachers

The MathForum, headquartered at Drexel U, offers a series of PoWs to teachers at five levels, from Fundamental and Pre-Algebra through Pre-Calculus.
For information, visit The MathForum.

George Polya

We are extremely pleased and honored that our ComMuniCator journal was chosen to publish the transcript of a class taught by George Polya. Great pains were taken to transcribe the filmed class accurately, and then to edit it for a written article, without changing any of the flavor of the original. We are pleased to post this important, timeless document. It is now also available on audio tape in Polya's own voice..
Please go to our Publications page.
